Mucedola Earns Perfect Score and Spot on Area All State Jr. High Band

Mucedola

Sophia Mucedola has been passionate about playing the flute since she picked up the instrument in fifth grade. This passion, along with countless hours spent practicing have now paid off in a big way. Mucedola has qualified for the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) Area All-State Junior High School Band.

Last May, Sophia had the opportunity to participate in the NYSSMA solo competition, where she performed her level 4 solo, Sicilienne by Gabriel Fauré. Her performance earned her a perfect score from the NYSSMA judges and secured her a coveted spot in the Zone 3 Area All-State Junior High School Band.

Zone 3 comprises Cayuga, Onondaga, Tompkins, Broome, Cortland, and Tioga counties. The selection of students for this prestigious group is based on solo scores and teacher recommendations. Sophia's qualification is a testament to her exceptional musical abilities and dedication to her craft.

Mucedola has been given four songs to practice between now and November 3, 2023, when she will meet with the rest of the band for their first and only rehearsal. The following evening, they will perform together live at a public concert at Homer Central High School.

Mucedola’s family has deep musical roots in the area. Her great grandfather, Frank Mucedola, was a well-known accordion player, performer and composer who owned Mucedola Accordion School in Auburn, NY. Recently, Sophia has been dabbling in learning the accordion, along with piano and tenor saxophone.

Sophia's achievement is particularly noteworthy as she stands out as one of the very few Port Byron students to ever qualify for the Area All-State Junior High School Band.
